Tehran, 11 Jun – On the morning of Wednesday, a group of retired teachers and educators carrying placards staged a demonstration outside Iran’s Administrative Justice Court in Sattari Highway – Mokhberi Boulevard – in Tehran to protest against the Hassan Rouhani government’s neglect of their low salaries and disregard for their livelihoods, according to local reports.

The slogans on placards carried by retired teachers had themes such as: “Poverty line = 3 million, our salaries = 1 million”; “Livelihoods and dignity is our inalienable right”; “We the retirees want dignity and livelihood”; “Lift discrimination and put the law in its place”; “Free insurance for the retirees”; and “Treason by Nobakht, supported by the courts”.

The demonstration was held following an earlier call by retired teachers, and the attempts by the Intelligence Ministry could not prevent it.

Over one hundred retired teachers from Tehran, Karaj, and Kermanshah participated in this protest gathering.

On 5 June, the teachers had issued notifications on social networks, which read in part:

“Honorable retired teachers of Tehran and neighboring cities: The Administrative Court of Justice has trampled the inalienable and legal right of the retirees in favor of the government and pension fund by cancelling the judgement issued in favor of the pension payment for retirees regarding a raise in salaries to match the inflation rate from 2007 to 2014 in accordance with the Article 125 of the Law on Civil Service Management. Join us to protest and defend your rights”.
