London, Apr. 29 – Former British Conservative leader William Hague has called for a ban on military sales to Iran after Tehran ignored a 30-day deadline by the United Nations Security Council to suspend its uranium enrichment activities and the International Atomic Energy Agency released a report accusing the Islamic Republic of nuclear non-compliance.

“Iran clearly has not complied fully with the IAEA, nor has it responded in an appropriate manner to the UNSC’s concerns. It is crucial that Iran restores its implementation of the Additional Protocol; fully discharges its obligations under its [Non-Proliferation Treaty”> Safeguards Agreement; and to convince the international community that its nuclear activities are, and are seen to be exclusively peaceful and in compliance with the IAEA’s requirements”, Hague, who is currently the Shadow Foreign Secretary, said in a statement on Friday.

“In the meantime the British Government should propose that the UN Security Council halts the sale of dual use nuclear technology to Iran, halts nuclear co-operation with Iran, and halts sales of military technology to Iran”, he said.

Hague argued that in the absence of such measures Tehran would not feel under any “significant pressure” from the Security Council.
