Tehran, Jul. 01 – From the Grapevine…

Pro-democracy activists are continuing a political graffiti campaign in Tehran ahead of the 9 July student-led uprising anniversary.

Slogans are targeting Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. “You despondent Khamenei, 9 July is on the way” and “Honourable Iranians, don’t forget about 9 July” were seen written on walls in dozens of locations, including in the Galoubandak and Haf-e Tir metro stations and Bahman Park in south Tehran’s Nazi-Abad district.

On 9 July 1999 widespread protests erupted across Iran after members of the hard-line Bassij militia raided a dormitory in Tehran University. One student was killed when he was thrown out of the window. The ensuing nationwide protests that erupted came as a shock to Iran’s clerical leaders and lasted for over a week.
