Iranian authorities are implementing broad measures to restrict university places to trusted affiliates.

According to students opposed to the regime, authorities are not allowing students from the provinces to enter Tehran universities in an apparent bid to prevent rising student protests in the capital.

Government-issued quotas for university places have reportedly been allocated to state-affiliated groups and relatives of government officials. However no quota has been allocated to regular students who passed this year’s university entrance exams.

The University of Tehran, a traditional hotbed of anti-government activities, is said to have been ordered by authorities not to accept students from the provinces, even those who have an impeccable academic performance.
