Tehran, Oct. 21 – From the Grapevine…

Some 60 percent of gold traders in Tehran’s Grand Bazaar had closed their shops from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm on Wednesday, continuing the strike by gold traders and jewellers over the increase in value added tax (VAT).

They are demanding the government annul new laws on 3 percent VAT.

Tehran’s chief prosecutor earlier this month warned that the judiciary would prosecute anyone who “disturbs public order” by closing the bazaar.

Iranian intelligence agents have since arrested the director of Tehran’s Gold and Jewellery Union and a number of retailers.

The strike began last month at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar.
