Iran Does Not Have the Leverage It Thinks It Has

Iran does not have the leverage it thinks it has

Iran Focus

London, 24 July – Relations between the United States and Iran heated up over the weekend. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned that war with Iran would be “the mother of all wars”. He said: “America should know that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace, and war with Iran is the mother of all wars.”

U.S. President Donald Trump warned Iran that he will not allow such threats to be made. His anger was evident in his message on social media that he posted in block capitals. His message on Twitter read: “To Iranian President Rouhani: NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE. WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH. BE CAUTIOUS!”

London, 23 July – Mass demonstrations are erupting all over Basra in Iraq and are spreading to the southern parts of the country and Baghdad. Protesters are threatening to obstruct oil industry and activity with major rallies.

In terms of natural resources, Basra is one of the riches cities in the world. Basra and the surrounding areas, however, are in a complete state of disarray. Aside from corruption and conflict, Iraq is suffering the effects of being ripped apart by opposing religious and political forces. The historic canals of Basra are now full of rubbish and the city’s strategic location has meant it has been trampled through by the forces that invaded the country. Basra is now rife with squatter settlements, mostly inhabited by people from rural areas trying and failing to get away from poverty. Ditches are filled with sewage.

MEK support outside of Iran-Paris-Free-Iran-2018

By Pooya Stone

The Iranian Government often likes to portray the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as highly unpopular inside and outside of Iran, which is an outright lie.

We’ve already covered various topics, including the current Iranian uprising and MEK TV, which show how much support the MEK has within Iran, so this time we will be focusing on how the MEK actually enjoys wide support from politicians and activists in the international community.

London, 23 July – The Saudi Ambassador to the United States tweeted this weekend about the special relationship between Al Qaida and Iran, writing that the rogue state had been working with the terrorist group all along to target both the US and Saudi Arabia.

Prince Khalid Bin Salman began his Twitter thread by affirming that Saudi Arabia was firmly against terrorism in all its forms, before he began to describe terror cells, like Daesh and Al Qaida, and Iran as just two sides of the same coin. He noted that Iran was widely cited as the leading state sponsor of terrorism and that the mullahs frequently directed terrorist attacks in the Middle East and across the globe.

Iran Focus

London, 23 July – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani recently threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf and cut off a large section of the world’s oil supply in retaliation for sanctions levied against them by the US.

Rouhani, often wrongly described as a moderate by the US, was praised for these comments by General Qassem Soleimani, commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, who is under sanctions from the US, the EU, and the UN.

Soleimani said: “I kiss your hands for these wise statements, and I am at your service to implement any policy that serves the Islamic Republic.”

London, 22 July – In 2012 as part of the Iran Freedom and Counter-Proliferation Act, the state-run Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), sanctions were imposed that designated IRIB for perpetrating serious human rights abuses and enforced secondary sanctions against any company connected to it. During negotiations for the 2015 nuclear deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), those sanctions were waived. This week, President Trump must decide whether the State Department will continue waiving the sanctions.

How Mullahs attempt to discredit the MEK within Iran

By Jubin Katiraie

The Mullahs have spent decades trying to discredit the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) within Iran through a series of strange methods, even before they banned the opposition group in the 1980s.

While state-sponsored propaganda usually takes the form of “news” reports and government statements, Iranian government has gone even further than that in their attempts to smear the MEK, including staging anti-MEK propaganda exhibitions at school and even airing network dramas to defame the MEK. Let’s look at some of those now in more detail.

Just outside the city of Varzaneh, farmers have been gathering on a daily basis, next to a dry canal that once irrigated their farms, to plead for help from the mullahs, while holding up signs that read “How long will you eat your bread made with our blood?”.

Protester Mostafa Benvidi said: “We are the people. Help the people. At night they go to bed hungry!”

London, 20 July – Iran attempted to bomb the rally of their organised resistance in Paris last month, but thankfully, their would-be bombers were caught before they could carry out the brutal attack.

On June 30, an Iran-linked Belgian couple were arrested by Belgian police and found to have explosives and a detonator in their car. Their plan was to attack the opposition rally, organised by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), which around 100,000 people were attending.
